Jubilee Library is the main library serving Brighton & Hove and has a total of three floors providing services to the community. Camcool has been maintaining the library’s air and chiller equipment for many years now, and it was on one of our usual inspections that the ongoing problems with the existing chiller equipment were discussed.

Being well over 15 years old the chiller setup at the library was coming to its natural end of life. With the continual running repairs becoming uneconomical alongside compressor failures and operation issues, the decision was made to replace it with a new, energy efficient system.

We looked at different options and manufacturers and we chose Carrier Chillers because of their high regard in the industry and the fact that it met the client’s needs better than the alternatives.

Replacing the existing equipment involved lifting the new system to the roof and removing the old system using a crane. Being a high footfall area open to the public, we had to carry out the lift works out of hours to minimise the potential risks.

With crane access to the roof confined to the nearby courtyard, and the location of the new chiller being at the opposite end of the roof, we had to employ a tower crane.

We were ready to commence the lift at 5am on the specified morning, giving us enough time to lift the new unit and remove the existing unit from the roof, before the public appeared around 7.30am, however due to the inclement weather and winds, we finally finished the crane work at 7pm that evening!

Once again, health and safety was paramount to this project as we had to stop both the general public, staff and service users from entering the building during its normal opening hours.  We worked closely with the client health and safety office to ensure that correct procedures were being followed at all times.

Not only does the client has new, more efficient and cost saving equipment installed, the service users and workers in the library now have a much more pleasant environment to operate within.
